Sencha Tea

Sencha tea is a popular type of Japanese green tea known for its fresh, grassy flavor and vibrant green color. Making a perfect cup of sencha tea involves careful attention to water temperature, steeping time, and the amount of tea leaves used. Here is a simple recipe to brew sencha tea:

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon (2-3 grams) of sencha tea leaves
  • 1 cup (240 ml) of water
  • Optional: honey or lemon for added flavor

Instructions:

  1. Heat the Water:
    • Heat water to approximately 160°F to 175°F (70°C to 80°C). Avoid boiling water, as it can scorch the delicate sencha leaves and result in a bitter taste.
    • If you don’t have a thermometer, bring the water to a boil and then let it cool for about 1-2 minutes to reach the desired temperature.
  2. Measure the Tea Leaves:
    • Use 1 teaspoon (2-3 grams) of sencha tea leaves for every 1 cup (240 ml) of water. Adjust the amount of tea leaves according to your taste preference.
  3. Pre-warm the Teapot:
    • Pour a small amount of the hot water into your teapot, swirl it around, and then discard. This helps to warm the teapot and ensures a consistent brewing temperature.
  4. Add Tea Leaves:
    • Place the measured sencha tea leaves into the pre-warmed teapot.
  5. Steep the Tea:
    • Pour the hot water over the sencha tea leaves.
    • Let the tea steep for about 1 to 2 minutes. Adjust the steeping time based on your taste preference, but be careful not to over-steep, as this can lead to a bitter flavor.
  6. Pour and Enjoy:
    • Pour the tea into cups, making sure to pour out all the liquid to avoid over-steeping the leaves in the pot.
    • Optionally, you can add a bit of honey or a slice of lemon to enhance the flavor, though traditional sencha is enjoyed plain to appreciate its natural taste.

Tips for the Best Sencha Tea:

  • Quality of Tea Leaves: Use high-quality sencha tea leaves for the best flavor and aroma.
  • Water Quality: Use filtered or spring water to avoid any off-flavors from tap water.
  • Multiple Infusions: Sencha leaves can be steeped multiple times. For the second infusion, use slightly hotter water (175°F to 185°F / 80°C to 85°C) and steep for a shorter time (15-30 seconds).

Enjoy your freshly brewed sencha tea, a refreshing and healthful beverage perfect for any time of the day!
